The New John Lewis Christmas Ad Has Just Landed.
The New John Lewis Ad Has Landed. Here’s What We Think.
It’s official, Christmas has started, with the arrival of one of the biggest moments of the festive season - the John Lewis Christmas ad. No surprises that it is a little different this year but with the same goodwill and cheer to get everyone in the mood for Christmas.
A simpler ad than the year before, featuring Excitable Edgar, this year’s ad focuses on kindness, and giving to charity, rather than gift giving. John Lewis aim to raise £5m for FareShare and Home-Start, who focus on the redistribution of food, and supporting families with young children in their time of need.
The ad starts with a young boy, staring longingly at his football that is stuck up a tree. He is soon joined by a young girl who throws her umbrella up to knock it down and saves the day. And so begins a chain of acts of kindness.
John Lewis toyed with the idea of not creating a Christmas ad at all, after a difficult year not just for the country but for the retail giant themselves, but they decided to go ahead but with the vision of creating a lasting legacy, rather than just an ad, that will hopefully improve the lives of many.
John Lewis has managed to get the tone just right this year, reflecting the change within our communities, with more people than ever volunteering and helping their neighbours during what has undeniably been a difficulty year. The ad also manages to still embody festive cheer because Christmas is probably more important this year than ever, a time to connect with our loved ones in whatever way we can and remember what is really important.
