The home delivery personal stylist industry has been growing steadily over the last couple of years and you will likely have seen a number of different companies offering to spruce up your wardrobe for as little as a tenner. But how well do these services cater for petite women?

I have to admit, the idea of having a professional dress me in clothes selected just for me, while I remain in the comfort of my very own home is incredibly appealing. But of course, as a petite woman who is 5’2”, I had my reservations about how suitable these options would be for me. So I decided to give Lookiero a try.

So How Does It Work?

You start by filling in a questionnaire on the Lookiero website. They ask you about your fashion tastes, what your usual style is and if there is anything specific you are looking for, like workwear, evening outfit ideas, or day-to-day fashion inspiration. You tell them your age, weight, usual clothes size and budget, you can add a few photos of yourself and some notes for your stylist to help them get to you know you better, and that’s it. It is fairly straightforward and takes less than 10 minutes.

How Much Does It Cost?

Each box of clothes that you are sent to try costs £10. If you decide to keep any of the clothes you’ve been sent then the £10 is taken off the total cost of the items you decide to keep, which means the service is totally free if you decide to keep something. Returns are also free, so the most you will ever pay if you decide not to purchase anything is £10.

Is It Any Good?

Receiving the box was really quite exciting. I am a sucker for good packaging and they’ve got that down. When I opened up the box there were 5 different pieces of clothing inside for me to try with a cost list included. My instant reaction was that I really wasn’t sure about any of the items I had received, and there was definitely a lot of frowning as I picked everything up for closer inspection. But I was committed to giving this a good go, and I began to try everything on.

I started with a pair of black skinny jeans that cost £40. I wasn’t keen on the washed look of these and I guessed they were about 2 sizes too small. Once on, they weren’t actually as small as I had thought but they were definitely one size too small and about an inch too long in the leg, so they went straight back in the box.

I grabbed the leather-look jacket they had sent me, costing £55, to try on next. It felt amazing and looked like really great quality. Sadly it was too long in the body and arms for my petite frame and I was definitely being worn by the jacket rather than the other way around. Back in the box.

Next on was a white star print tie-waist shirt for £35.99, which was cute, if not a little dull, but it did fit well. Back in the box.

I then tried some dark blue, wide leg trousers costing £29.99, which were not something I would have ever picked for myself. But to my surprise they looked great and fit perfectly on my shorter legs. The more I moved around in them, the more I loved them and they were very much not going back in the box.

Lastly was a black and white striped jumper. I’ll be totally honest here, I was tempted not to bother trying this one on. I thought it was fairly basic and looked a bit frumpy, but not trying on the clothes defeated the object, so on this went too with a pair of my own jeans. I was actually shocked by how much I liked this look. The quality of the top had been completely lost on me until it was on my actual body, and it fit really nicely. I wasn’t sure if this was going back in the box.

What’s The Verdict

In terms of the clothes, after initial reservations, I ended up really liking a couple of the items in the box. I was disappointed by the jeans that didn’t fit well. I would have have also really loved if the leather-look jacket had been petite. It’s not a deal breaker for me because some of my favourite jackets that I own are not petite, but this one really was too big. I also wished I’d received at least one slightly dressier piece. When I filled in the questionnaire about what I was looking for, I stated that I wanted looks that could transfer from a smart-casual office environment to date nights, but I ended up with a fairly casual box of clothes.

The initial process itself was very quick and easy and actually quite fun. I set a modest budget of between £30-£60 per item and I’d say that all of the clothes were worthy of their individual price tags.

A downside of the service is that you only get 5 days to try on the clothes and let them know if you want to return anything. I did find the idea of that quite stressful having gotten so used to the standard 28 days returns policy from my favourite brands. Returning my unwanted items was also sadly not without problems. I let them know online what I was returning and chose a local drop-off point and carrier. Inside the box of clothes that they had sent me, was a large resealable bag to put everything in that I wanted to return, which had pre-paid returns postage on it, so all I had to do was drop it off to my chosen carrier. Great start.

Unfortunately this didn’t go as smoothly as it could have. I dropped my parcel off, got my proof of return slip and that was the end of that. That is until over 2 months later when I received an automatic email from Lookiero telling me that they had not received my return and reminding me of their returns policy and that I would need to pay for any items not returned. This panicked me slightly as because so much time had passed since I had returned the items, I wasn’t immediately sure where my proof of return slip might be. Thankfully, past me had been organised and had kept it in a safe place, so I emailed their customer service with the information they needed and they were quick to update me that it had been delayed with DPD.

I asked them why it had taken so long for them to notify me that the parcel had not shown up and they didn’t respond. I asked them a second time for clarification on whether this is the usual time frame they leave before flagging any issues (I had notified and returned the items after just 5 days after all), but again they didn’t respond, which was disappointing. The experience really struck home the importance of keeping hold of those proof of return slips as if I had misplaced mine, I would have had to cover the cost of the missing items.

Ultimately I was pretty pleased with the service, up until the return issues. It was fun, I enjoyed trying on things I wouldn’t normally wear, and I enjoyed the element of being surprised by styles that were new to me. The customer service and communication aspect should have been much better, and I hope that’s something they work on improving.

However, I do still think it’s a worthwhile service, and while the customer service still needs improvement, I would still recommend this service, especially if you feel quite lost when it comes to fashion and need some direction or want to just have a little fun dressing up. Just make sure you keep those returns slips safe!
